About this project

This ethnography highlights the working people in our communities. The project began when I interviewed doormen working in New York City. From there, it has grown to encompass people who work throughout the city, capturing their hopes and dreams for the future.

I felt it was important to capture the voices of people who are often overlooked while working hard at their jobs and taking care of their families. As well as conducting interviews, I am conducting research to provide a more comprehensive picture of the lives and struggles of working people.

Methods

The methods I used to produce this ethnography were interviews, photography, and data analysis. I conducted in-depth interviews with doormen in their buildings, immersing myself in their work environments. This method proved to be effective at capturing their authentic perspectives in the context of their workplaces. I was able to observe their interactions with delivery people and tenants, understand the challenges they face, and gain insight into their day-to-day lives. This approach provided a rich and detailed understanding of the role doormen play in their communities.
